Building a feminist nation: Scotland in the era of polycrisis
Despite some impressive legislative change in recent years, there is not a single facet of modern life in Scotland where structural gender bias does not exist. In other areas, superficial progress can often mask more complicated regress.
Impatient with the pace of progress and frustrated by data – where it does exist – being in such disparate sources, the authors have created a radical roadmap for a feminist Scotland by giving a concise overview of the current inequalities in one brief, accessible publication and by setting out what can be done using tried-and-tested case studies that can help every woman in Scotland thrive beyond the current – and deeply inadequate – status quo.
We believe that the core injustices within paid and unpaid labour, as well as the pervasive deficiencies around the safety and well-being of women in Scotland, are having a profound effect on the life of every woman in Scotland. This is why they go to the heart of the major political, economic and social preoccupations of women in Scotland today.
Through this short book we aim to set an expectation of understanding and knowledge on gender inequality that will assist in creating a Scotland that moves beyond rhetoric and into action which centres the most marginalised women.
‘The line up of contributors is impressive and diverse, the editors have done an excellent job in recruiting predominantly “next generation” voices. The pairing of academic and activists/lived experience/campaigners is likely to be productive, especially within a feminist ethos providing care and space.’
